King’s Chapel Burying Ground

King’s Chapel Burying Ground

The oldest cemetery in Boston is the King’s Chapel Burying Ground, established in 1630. It is located on Tremont Street, near its intersection with School Street, and is a site on the Freedom Trail. The cemetery predates the adjacent King’s Chapel, which was built in 1688.

Mary Chilton Winslow is buried in the King’s Chapel Burying Ground. She was one of the passengers on the Mayflower and is often noted as the first Pilgrim to step ashore in Plymouth Rock.
Her father, James Chilton, was also a passenger on the Mayflower, but he passed away during the voyage.

The cemetery covers 0.50 acres and contains over 1,800 grave markers dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
