Lincoln Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield

I went Inside the Lincoln Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. they did a Great job of the grand memorial dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their four sons: Edward, William, and Thomas.

Inside the tomb itself, a burial chamber is adorned with marble walls, bronze statues, and a red marble cenotaph inscribed with Lincoln’s name. The crypt is surrounded by stained glass windows and flags.

The several bronze statues of Abraham Lincoln, each depicting different moments from his life. These statues were specially cast and placed in the rotunda and hallways of the tomb to honor Lincoln’s legacy. Here are some notable ones:

  • Gutzon Borglum’s Bust of Lincoln—A bronze recasting of Borglum’s famous marble bust of Lincoln, originally located in the U.S. Capitol. This statue is placed at the entrance of the tomb.
  • Daniel Chester French’s Lincoln Memorial Statue (Small Version)—A miniature version of the famous Lincoln Memorial statue in Washington, D.C., located inside the tomb’s rotunda.
  • Various Bronze Reliefs— The tomb features bronze relief panels depicting key moments from Lincoln’s presidency, including the Emancipation Proclamation and his leadership during the Civil War.

These statues add to the solemn and grand atmosphere of the tomb, making it a powerful tribute to Lincoln’s life and legacy.

The tomb is a National Historic Landmark, and it remains one of the most visited presidential burial sites in the U.S.
