Abraham Lincoln’s long journey home after his assassination in 1865: His funeral train traveled for two weeks, stopping in major cities where thousands of mourners paid their respects.

Abraham Lincoln’s funeral included an open casket during several public viewings. and at various stops along his funeral train route to Springfield, Illinois.

When Abraham Lincoln’s body arrived in Springfield, Illinois his first tomb was a receiving vault at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Lincoln’s body was placed in this temporary vault for 5 years while plans for a permanent tomb were being finalized.

The Lincoln Tomb, his final resting place, was constructed between 1869 and 1874 and later underwent reconstruction in 1901 due to structural issues. The tomb houses Lincoln, his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their four sons.

In 1876, a group of Chicago counterfeiters attempted to steal Lincoln’s body from his tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery. They planned to hold his remains for ransom in exchange for the release of Benjamin Boyd, a jailed engraver who helped produce counterfeit money. The criminals broke into the tomb, opened Lincoln’s marble sarcophagus, and tried to remove his cedar casket. However, their plan was foiled by the Secret Service, who had been tipped off by an informant.

After the failed grave robbery, Lincoln’s remains were reburied under tons of concrete to prevent future theft attempts.
