Gator Joe’s Beach Bar & Grill is on the shores of Little Lake Weir in Ocklawaha, Florida. The restaurant is named after “Old Joe,” a famous alligator that lived in Lake Weir from around 1930 to 1952.
Legend has it that Old Joe’s foot has been preserved and has had various homes before being donated to Gator Joe’s.
The tale begins in 1934, when the FBI was searching for the notorious Ma Barker Gang. They intercepted a letter mentioning “Old Joe” near the gang’s hideout. This led them to Lake Weir, where the gang was eventually found and confronted in a dramatic four-hour gun battle.
While Ma Barker and her son were killed, Old Joe lived on.
Legend has it that gang members tried to kill Old Joe multiple times, but he survived until 1952, when he was killed by a local hunter named Vic Skidmore.
Since then, Old Joe’s foot has traveled to various places before being donated to Gator Joe’s Beach Bar & Grill by a friend of the hunter.
It’s a fascinating mix of local history and folklore!
