The Best Dog story of the Civil War.
Meet “Sallie Ann Jarrett”
Sallie Ann Jarrett was the Canine Mascot of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry.
She accompanying the solders throughout nearly the entire Civil War until she was killed in action in February 1862 Two months before the war would end.
Sallie joined the regiment where they were training at Camp Wayne. The men named her in honor of a young lady they admired (SALLIE)and their commanding officer (Colonel Jarrett)
The 11th were moved to Manassas Junction to protect the railroad and fought in Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Petersburg and Appomattox.
Her loyalty was undying for here at Gettysburg until she was found weak and close to death herself.
She recover and taught with the unit in every battle until she was mortally wounded in Feb 1865.
The veterans of the 11th forever memonrislized her by placing he bronze likeness on their monument in Gettysburg National Military Park.
